    Back To Basics

I have used Intensive Reading since 1999. Reading resources abound but I have always come back to the same set of IRP resources when I strike students who are struggling. What I love most about IRP : 1.The fact that the words are phonemically grouped, and then there is the option to find a similar sound family in a higher IRP level for more capable students. 2. The vocabulary exercises mean kids aren't just reading like robots, they learn word meanings in context of well-written sentences 3. The competitive element - striving to beat their own PB times for reading columns and whole page, and then striving to be fastest in the group or class 4. The games - word meanings dominoes is so well crafted - take the time to print them onto coloured card and laminate and they will last for many years. Memory cards also. I use Intensive Reading class-wide, utilizing both the Primary and the Secondary levels. I can' wait for the resource to become available as PDF so I can print directly from a computer as my photocopy budget is limited. This term I am trialling using the activities in a wipe-off plastic sleeve so I can reuse them. I have previously owned all of the IRP novels and the accompanying workbooks but they were souvenired by a colleague many years ago - miss them terribly. They are quite entertaining for Primary and Lower Secondary students to read and the workbooks are very comprehensive. Well done Heather Harvey on an excellent 'timeless' literacy resource. You have no idea how helpful it has been to me during 18 years of teaching. Regards, Jo Hutt
